UNLOVED GIFT SHOP SUPPORTS CIMC
NEW EQUIPMENT PURCHASED WITH HOSPITAL AUXILIARY DONATIONS
The Avalon Hospital Auxiliary’s Unloved Gift Shop has a mission. Their dedicated Board of Directors and volunteers accept quality resale and gently used items which are then sold to residents and Avalon visitors. In the process the AHA commits to donate the proceeds from their hard work to support Catalina Island Medical Center (specifically in the areas of improved patient comfort and satisfaction).
Being Avalon’s only “thrift store” means the shop is sorting through all of the items locals donate AND also trying to provide for the household and clothing needs for a community needing low-cost items. “Immediate past President Trecia Edwards and new President Mark Tasca and his wife Gail are instrumental in the success of the resale shop” said Christy Lins, AHA’s Treasurer. The Santa Catalina Island Company generously provided the store its new location 18 months ago at the beginning of the Atwater Arcade upgrade. The shop is now situated between Dr. Calise’s dental office and the Humane Society trailer on the back side of the Metropole Street buildings. The Island Company’s continuing donation of retail space is contingent upon the Thrift Shop’s support of Catalina Island Medical Center.
Christy Lins on behalf of the Avalon Hospital Auxiliary recently wrote a check for $7385 to CIMC to purchase a new vital signs monitor, a high-low table for physical and occupational therapy and a new digital piano for the Oak Room. In October of 2013 AHA donated $6069 to enable CIMC to get a physical therapy “lifestyle” gym, a portable cardiac defibrillator and equipment for patients to “lift to stand” during therapy and rehab.
The Unloved Gift Shop hours are Tuesdays 10:30-1:30 and Fridays and Saturdays from 11-1. If additional volunteers become available store hours could be expanded.
New outdoor shelves have been provided on the Humane Society side of the Thrift Store for donation items to be dropped off after hours. The Unloved Gift Shop is unable to accept furniture because of a lack of space. When the clothing racks are too full, the overflow items are donated to the Salvation Army in Long Beach. Books have been given to the Rotary Club to send to Romania as well. The community spirit is alive and well at “Unloved Gifts”.
Occasionally estate and heirloom items such as Catalina pottery and art are someone’s “special find”. Knick knacks, toys, books, clothing and household items are also available for purchase. Consider if you have any gently used quality items that you might be able to donate. The shop meets an important need in Avalon. If you are able to volunteer — bring a friend along and make the hours of service more fun. The Unloved Gifts Shop has been a Catalina institution for many years. It provides thrifty items and valuable funds for CIMC to the benefit of the community, the hospital residents and the Medical Center staff.
