Surrounded by baskets, jars, kitchen appliances. books, clothing, original Catalina pottery and kitschy knickknacks, Catalina Island Medical Center’s most dedicated Auxiliary volunteers sell “treasured necessities” and raise thousands of dollars each year.
Recently re-located to Metropole Avenue next to the Catalina Island Humane Society, the Avalon Hospital Auxiliary’s “Unloved Gift Shop” has been a source of important financial support for more than 40 years. The store is open about 20 hours per week. It’s volunteer staff works hard to raise funds for the medical center, providing financial contributions for patient care. From laboratory equipment to ophthalmoscopes, the Auxiliary’s profits have allowed Catalina Island Medical Center to provide equipment and services for residents and visitors that would have been unavailable otherwise.
In the last 42 years Auxiliary thrift store sales have generated more than $700,000. These funds directly contribute to providing the equipment and services that improve the lives of medical center patients. Auxiliary funded acquisitions include hundreds of items ranging from shower curtains to emergency resuscitation bags.
The Auxiliary is able to provide that level of support because of the dedication of local volunteers who work the cash register, sort donations, price merchandise and do the shop’s accounting. Anyone who would like to volunteer can stop by the shop and discuss their availability. Donations of clean, gently used items in good working order are also accepted during business hours.
