At Catalina Island Health’s Health Fair on Thursday April 27 nearly 50 medical providers and community partners will help patients, residents and visitors.
CI Health and the Avalon’s Lions Club are pleased to announce that the Southern California Lions Mobile Screening Unit will be coming to the Catalina Casino this year to screen patients for eye health and hearing problems. On its last visit in 2012 several people were diagnosed with eye or hearing issues and were referred to the Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation in Los Angles. These professional Lions District Health Services are free to anyone who needs them and cannot afford them.
Catalina Island residents who need a hearing test or hearing aid, an eye exam and glasses will be glad to know that the Avalon Lions Club will pay for these services as well as the transportation to and from their mainland appointment if people cannot afford the cost.
The Southern California Lions Mobile Screening Unit is 38 feet long, 13 feet high, 8 1/2 feet wide and weighs 26,000 pounds. The Unit has on board electrical power, a hydraulic self-leveling system and the capability to expand to a width of 14 feet.
Jamie Hmielak, Lions Club President explained that “bringing the Mobile Screening Unit to the island is just one of the many ways our club helps the citizens of Avalon. Living on the island makes it difficult for people, especially those in need, to get to the mainland for eyesight and hearing issues. Having the Mobile Screening Unit come to Avalon allows us to help people who otherwise might not have access to these services. If an issue is found during the screening, the Lions Club can also assist with sending that person to the mainland for further examinations and treatment.” Complicated arrangements are necessary to have the unit driven to Avalon Freight Services in San Pedro shipped to Avalon, and then returned to Mainland storage after the Health Fair concludes. Jamie Hmielak shared that “the Lions Club would like to thank Greg Bombard and Avalon Freight Services for donating the barge shipment of the unit to and from the island.”
Avalon Residents and visitors may also support the Avalon Lions Club Sight and Hearing Program by donating eye glasses and hearing aids in the blue receptacle box in the US Bank lobby. The donated glasses and hearing aids will be recycled and provided to people who have sight or hearing issues and cannot afford the cost of the equipment they require.
